Viagra Brings Hope to High Blood Pressure Patients

The facts are staggering. A great deal of men who currently suffer from high blood pressure also suffer from, or will in the future unfortunately acquire, some form of E.D. (erectile dysfunction). Fortunately though, Viagra can help. Viagra has been successfully tested on patients having high blood pressure who also suffer from erectile dysfunction. The results have been very positive and there is every reason to feel optimistic about the future of E.D. treatments in patients with hypertension. In fact, the latest research suggests that Viagra in itself may possibly reduce blood pressure, without considering its sexual enhancing properties.

Baltimore Study demonstrates Viagra Reduces Blood Pressure

A Baltimore research team composed of doctors and industry leaders, such as Cardiology Professor Dr. David Kass from Johns Hopkins University, concluded that Viagra may possibly be used to treat hypertension on top of its current uses. This is an amazing revelation considering that Viagra was thought to have very little effect on the heart. Viagra is currently only being prescribed to patients with E.D or who suffer from pulmonary hypertension. This study may in the future lead doctors to begin prescribing Viagra for patients having joint E.D. and hypertension problems though this is currently just speculation.

The study took 35 healthy men and injected them with a special drug in order to raise their blood pressure and make their heart pump faster. Once their heart was racing, some of the men were then administered Viagra while others were given a sugar pill (a placebo). The men that had been given the actual Viagra rather than the dummy pill saw their heart beat lower by 50 percent.

What about Levitra and Cialis?

Though this test was only performed using Viagra, it is believed that the other two FDA approved PDE-5 inhibitors (Cialis and Levitra) could possibly have the same blood pressure lowering effect being that they are chemically similar to Viagra. However, tests would have to be performed to prove their exact effectiveness.

Current Recommendations Regarding Blood Pressure and Viagra

For now, let’s be happy to know that Viagra can help men with E.D., even if they suffer from hypertension (high blood pressure). In the future, Viagra may possibly be the only drug you need to alleviate both conditions but ‘til then we will need to follow our doctor’s advice exclusively. It is important to never self prescribe Viagra or any other prescription medication for that matter. Your doctor should be made aware of both your E.D., as well as your blood pressure condition before prescribing you Viagra.

Viagra should be avoided if you are currently taking:

  • Nitrate medications like nitroglycerine

  • Are currently not healthy enough for sexual activity.

  • Are taking alpha blockers (Viagra dosage may be adjusted in these cases)
