California Student Aid Commission Student Member

Every three years, the Student Senate for California Community Colleges calls for nominations for one of the two student seats on the California Student Aid Commission (CSAC). The Commission is responsible for administering financial aid programs for students attending public and private universities, colleges, and vocational schools in California. It serves as a resource for policymakers and the public on college affordability and financing issues, and advocates for policy changes to eliminate cost as a barrier to any qualified California student pursuing a higher education

Two students serve on CSAC, serving staggered two-year terms. The governor makes these student appointments from a list of recommendations put forward by the Student Senate for California Community Colleges. Student organizations from CSU, UC, and the independents also forward names to the governor for consideration.

Any student enrolled in a California community college with a minimum of five-semester units, or its equivalent, and enrolled in a community college at least one semester before their appointment may apply for the student position on the California Student Aid Commission. In addition, if appointed, the student member cannot also be a transfer student to UC or CSU (see ECS 69511.5). More information about minimum and desired qualifications can be found in the nomination policy linked below.

Candidates for nomination must submit an online application and current resumé.  A letter of support from the candidate’s local student body association is desirable.

Nominees will be interviewed by an SSCCC Ad hoc committee in August with final selection by the SSCCC Board of Directors on September 11, 2021.  All candidates will be notified of the outcome of the nomination process. Thank you for your assistance in identifying worthy and qualified candidates.

TIMELINE

The application process for the student member to the California Student Aid Commission for the 2021 - 2023 term is now open. Note, this is the second call for a student nomination for CSAC so the timeline contained in the process is not relevant to this call. Instead, the interviews will be conducted during the week of August 29th with a final decision made by September 11, 2021.
