Call for Workshop Session Proposals

The SSCCC Professional Development and Leadership Event is currently accepting proposals for workshop session presenters. We welcome you to become an integral part of the SSCCC event. This year, the SSCCC will be inviting groups of students, associated student body organizations, partners, and other stakeholders to provide the platform for insightful and empowering discussions and collaboration between students, educators, and other interested parties.

Conference Details 
Date: September 30 - October 1, 2022
Location:  In person and online
Conference Attendees: 200

Workshop session schedule: We are accepting proposals in two formats: 60-minute and 75-minute interactive workshops. A minimum of 15 minutes of the session should be reserved for questions from the audience.

Format: The presenter can determine the presentation format. We encourage you to choose a presentation that engages and educates the participants.

Handouts: Provide to the SSCCC for posting on the website and the event mobile app.  

Fee: There will be no honorarium or reimbursement for the presentation. The registration fee will be waived for selected presenters. Once you are selected as a presenter, you will receive directions on how to register. 

Deadline: Proposals are due no later than Sunday, August 21, 2022.

Notification: Those submitting proposals will be notified by Monday, September 2, 2022, regarding the status of their proposal.

Proposal Submission Process:  All proposals will be evaluated by our SSCCC Events Committee based on content, level of engagement of the presenters with students, and relevancy to the workshop strands (see proposal requirements at the link below). The purpose is to identify presenters with interest, passion, and expertise on the selected topic. Proposal submissions will only be accepted by submitting through this link.

Workshop Strands

This year's conference theme centers around “Tomorrow’s Leaders Begin Today: Be the first, be courageous, be a leader”. The following are the Workshop Strands for this year’s conference.    

Develop and Foster Courageous Student Leadership
The SSCCC integrates leadership training and networking opportunities for our students. Programs across the state support student leadership groups. These student leaders are doing a broad range of initiatives and activities on their campuses to build community and foster student success. These workshops will focus on how student leaders are developing themselves and the activities and strategies they are using on their campuses. 

Be an Advocate for Change
The SSCCC is the official voice as recognized by the Board of Governors, legislature, Chancellor’s Office, and other stakeholders for more than 2.1 million students in California community college. Legislative advocacy is one of the SSCCC pillars to use our voice. These workshops should empower students to use their voice to influence policy, educate stakeholders, and inform constituents of those issues that impact higher education and students in particular.    

Take the Initiative in the Face of Challenges
Community college students face a number of difficulties and challenges. In 2020, Covid challenged students even more by forcing them to learn strictly online, some lost their jobs, their homes, and even a family member or friend. However, community college students are resilient and these challenges provide an opportunity to grow. These workshops should provide students an opportunity to share their experiences and learn how to use their vulnerabilities, challenges, fears, and struggles to effectively cope with, or adapt to, stress and challenging life situations.

Resources for Student Success
The SSCCC advocates for a number of issues related to student success including homelessness, basic needs, housing, and other community resources students need to be truly successful in completing their education.  However, students have limited knowledge about how to leverage these resources to help their fellow students and the community. These workshops will share how students identify resources and communicate them throughout the college and community, as well as how to ensure all students have access.
