About Us
The Student Senate for California Community Colleges (SSCCC), is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit student organization recognized by the Board of Governors of the California Community Colleges. The SSCCC was established in conjunction with local student body associations on May 7, 2006, so that the community college students of California may have a formal and effective means for participating in the formation of state policies that have or may have a significant impact on students. The SSCCC represents the students of the California community college (CCC) system in state-level shared governance and legislative advocacy.
The mission of our organization is to pursue policies that will improve student access, promote student success, engage and empower local student leaders, and enrich the collegiate experience for all California community college students.
The embodiment of the Student Senate for California Community Colleges is the Delegate Assembly, which consists of one delegate from each local student body association recognized pursuant to California Education Code §76060. The activities and affairs of the SSCCC and all of its powers are exercised by the Board of Directors, composed of six (6) Board Officers and twenty (20) directors. The Executive Director also serves as a non-voting, ex-officio member of the Board and maintains institutional memory and relationships with system partners while student leaders only serve one-year terms.
The 116 California Community Colleges are divided into 10 regions that serve as administrative subdivisions of the SSCCC. Region participation is crucial to connecting and collaborating with student leaders across the state. Region Delegate Assembly meetings are a way for the SSCCC to disseminate information to its constituents and keep a constant pulse on the needs of students and local concerns.
Effective January 1, 2020, the SSCCC is funded through a $1 student representation fee, collected by local community colleges to support the operations and activities of the SSCCC. The SSCCC is to provide effective student representation and participation in state-level community college shared governance, with legislative affairs representatives to advocate before the Legislature and other state and local governmental entities.
The SSCCC is committed to meet the following requirements of Education Code §76060.5:
- Establish a sustainable foundation for statewide community college student representation and advocacy;
- Promote institutional and organizational memory;
- Ensure and maintain responsible community college student organizational oversight and decision making;
- Strengthen regional approaches for community college student representation and coordination;
- Promote and enhance student opportunities for engagement in community college student issues and affairs;
- Provide for open and public transparency and accountability; and
- Support student participation and engagement in statewide higher education policy and advocacy activities.
