Student Senate for California Community Colleges Responds to SCOTUS Decision Upholding DACA

SACRAMENTO, Calif. – Today, the Supreme Court of the United States upheld the Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals (DACA) program. While this is only a temporary solution for our DACA students, the Student Senate for California Community Colleges is heartened to see the decision to protect the California Community College system nearly 70,000 undocumented students. It is now time for Congress to act to reaffirm this nation’s commitment to the values of equity, opportunity, and justice through permanent protection for DACA students, who form an integral part of our local communities and in many ways represent the best aspirations of our system.

The California Community College system has defined itself by a commitment to providing educational access and opportunities to all who can benefit from it. Through the course of this legal battle, the California Community Colleges system has continued to prove its commitment to this goal through everything from the creation of new educational resources to legal action. It’s vitally important that this work continues. The Student Senate stands alongside all our system partners to continue to create a more open and inclusive system that can best serve all those seeking an education.

The California Community Colleges is the largest system of higher education in the nation, composed of 73 districts and 115 colleges serving 2.1 million students per year.  The Student Senate for California Community College works to promote and safeguard access for current and future students to California public higher education in accordance with the Master Plan for Higher Education through system participatory governance, legislative and policy advocacy, and regional support and development and is the official voice of California community college students statewide.
