SSCCC Condemns Executive Order to Dismantle the U.S. Department of Education

Sacramento, CA – The Student Senate for California Community Colleges (SSCCC) strongly opposes President Donald Trump's recent executive order directing the dismantling of the U.S. Department of Education. This action threatens to undermine the quality and accessibility of education for millions of students nationwide, particularly those from underserved communities.

The Department of Education is crucial in administering federal funding, overseeing student loan programs, and enforcing civil rights in educational institutions. Its elimination could lead to significant disruptions in these essential services, disproportionately affecting low-income and marginalized students.

While the administration suggests that critical functions like student loans and Pell Grants will continue under other federal agencies, the absence of a dedicated department raises concerns about the efficacy and equity of such transitions.

"The U.S. Department of Education is not just an agency; it is a lifeline for millions of students. As student leaders, we will not back down. Our commitment to fighting for equity, opportunity, and the future of higher education is unwavering, and we will continue to raise our voices against any efforts that threaten to undermine it." Ivan Hernandez, President.

The SSCCC remains committed to advocating for policies that ensure equitable access to quality education for all students. We call upon Congress to reject any measures that would dismantle the Department of Education and uphold the federal government's responsibility to support and regulate our nation's educational system.

The California Community Colleges is the largest system of higher education in the nation, composed of 73 districts and 117 colleges serving over 2 million students per year. The Student Senate for California Community Colleges mission is to enrich the collegiate experience for all California community college students by pursuing policies that will improve student access and success while engaging and empowering local student leaders and honoring equity and diversity.
