Marleny Medina Serrano
My name is Marleny Medina Serrano (she/her/ella) and I am double majoring in Political Science and Philosophy. I am a first generation student and a first generation American, I hope to one day be the first in my family to attend law school. My parents emigrated from Zumpahuacan in central Mexico and I am very proud of my roots. I believe heavily in the power of education to break generational barriers, and so I was inspired to work for my college's HSI Title V Grant. I work as a Promotora, connecting first generation Hispanic students to resources on campus as well as fostering a sense of belonging on campus to increase retention rates within Hispanic students. I also go into the community to speak about the opportunities MiraCosta College has to offer like free English learning classes or the Mira Costa Promise to otherwise neglected community members. I have also been working with Mira Costa’s Student Accessibility Services to create the foundations to a new Peer Mentors Programs for SAS students. Working for the greater good of students has become a great passion of mine and I am excited to now work with the SSCCC.
